Baseball Takes Key Series at Wingate With Split of Sunday's Doubleheader

WINGATE, NC -- Catawba and host Wingate split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Christopher Stadium.  The Catawba Indians took a 5-4 win in the opener with the Bulldogs grabbing a 2-1 win in game two.  The Indians move to 20-12 overall and 14-6 in the SAC, while Wingate is 22-10 and 16-7.  The game two loss stopped Catawba's winning streak at 11 games.

Catawba rallied from an early 4-1 deficit in the opener to win in extra innings.  Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) drove in the tying run with a two-out single in the top of the seventh and Will Beeson's (Advance, NC/Davie Co. HS) bases-loaded groundout in the eighth brought home the eventual winning run.

The Bulldogs went on top in the first after a three-run homer from Josh Clark.  Wingate took its 4-1 lead after three innings on an unearned off a two-out single from Justin Somers.

Catawba had scored its first run on a single by Shaefer Shepard (Boca Raton, FL/Boca Raton HS/Francis Marion) in the second.  That inning started when Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) reached first on a wild pitch after striking out on what would have been the third out.  Jon Wallace (Salisbury, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Lynchburg) walked before Shepard's single with two outs.

Wallace hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) plated Kronenfeld with a groundout in the fifth.  Kronenfeld had doubled with one out and went to third on a single by Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS).

In the seventh, Mario Parisi (Shirley, NC/Longwood HS) started the frame with a pinch-hit single and Gary Williams (Southport, NC/S. Brunswick HS) came on to run.  Shepard sacrificed him to second and Williams went to third on a groundout by Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS).  Kronenfeld then got his clutch hit up the middle to tie the game.

Wingate threatened in the bottom half of the seventh.  With two outs, the Bulldogs loading the bases on a hit batter, an infield single and a walk.  John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS) came back to strike out Blake Prince to end the frame.

Satterfield led off the eighth with a double and went to third on a throwing error.  A groundout was followed by a walk and a hit batter to load the bases.  Beeson got Satterfield home on a fielder's choice ground out.  Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) pitched a perfect eighth to notch his sixth save.

Tuttle improved to 5-2 with the win.  He allowed four runs (three earned) off eight hits.  The senior walked one and fanned eight.  Patrick Hanes (0-1) took the loss as he entered to start the eighth.  Stephen Vaughn started for the Bulldogs, but did not factor in the decision.  He went seven innings, also allowing four runs with three earned.

Kronenfeld and Hawks each had two hits for Catawba in the opener.  Thomas Spitz collected two hits for the Bulldogs.

Wingate salvaged the final game of the series, scoring the only runs it needed in the first inning.  Clark did the damage with a two-run double.  Rob Currie made that stand up as he allowed just a run off three hits to improve to 6-1.  He walked three and fanned five.

Kronenfeld provided the lone run for the Indians with a leadoff home run in the sixth.  Shepard (4-1) took the loss.  He gave up just the two runs, one earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts.

In the Wingate first, Eric Serra singled with one out and Spitz reached on an error.  Clark followed with his double to plate both runners.

Catawba returns to Newman Park on Tuesday as the Indians will host Winston-Salem State at 6 p.m.
