Softball gets win over Lake Superior

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College defeated visiting Lake Superior State 11-3 in softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The first game was halted in the fifth inning due to the 8-run rule, while the second game was rained out. Catawba improves to 6-3, while Lake Superior drops its season opener. Lake Superior used consecutive errors to open the game to plate a run and take a 1-0 lead. Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) helped the Lady Indians out of further damage as she picked a runner of third for the second out of the frame. Catawba would take command of the game in its first, scoring nine runs on just one hit. An error led off the inning and was followed by two hit batters and four walks for a 4-1 lead. Myers would cap the scoring for the inning with the only hit, driving in two runs for the 9-1 lead. Catawba scored on two wild pitches in the second for an 11-1 lead. Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) earned the win to improve to 3-1. She allowed four hits over five innings with a walk and seven strikeouts. Myers had two of the four Catawba hits. Chelsea Sparrow (Dexter, MI) and Ashley Hughes (Gladstone, MI) had RBI doubles for the Lakers in the fifth. #####
