Big Inning Too Much For Baseball to Overcome vs. WSSU
SALISBURY, NC -- Winston-Salem State scored 11 runs in the fifth inning to overcome a 7-0 deficit and grab a 14-10 win over host Catawba in baseball action on Tuesday night at Newman Park. The Rams improve to 26-12, winning the first meeting between the schools in baseball since 1973. The Catawba Indians fall to 20-13.
Ray Crawford had two of his three hits in the big fifth inning, hitting a home run and a triple to drive in five runs. Leland Clemmons and Jacob Barber also homered in the inning.
Catawba had grabbed a 7-0 lead, scoring six times on six hits in the bottom of the fourth. Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) capped that big frame with a three-run home run.
The Rams struck right back. The three home runs accounted for five runs to chase Catawba starter Sean Grant (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS), who had blanked WSSU for the first four innings. Michael Trombino (Boca Raton, FL/Cavalry Academy) recorded an out, but that was followed by a double, a walk, an infield single and another walk to cut the lead to 7-6. Clemmons, who had earlier hit a two-run homer, singled home two runs to put the Rams up 8-7. Crawford capped the inning with his bases-clearing triple.
Those two half innings accounted for the bulk of the scoring. WSSU added two unearned runs in the sixth on a two-out, two-run single from Levi Grassley and got a home run from Alex Grubb in the ninth. Catawba closed to within 13-10 in the eighth as Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) doubled home a run and two more came in on a two-out error.
Jordan Carlton (4-1) earned the win in relief for the Rams. He went the final five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) off four hits. He walked two and struck out three. Trombino (0-2) took the loss for Catawba. Joe Watson (Advance, NC/Davie Co. HS) shined in relief for Catawba as he fanned seven of the 10 men he faced over the final three innings.
Crawford's three hits led the 16-hit attack by WSSU. Clemmons had two hits and four RBI, while Grassley drove in three runs on two hits. Grubb, Conner Andrus and Rafael Gonzalez also had two hits for the Rams.
Zubillaga and Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) each had three hits for Catawba. Zubillaga joined Brooks with three RBI. Brooks and Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) both had two hits.
Catawba travels to UNC Pembroke on Wednesday for a regional battle with the Braves at 6 p.m.
