13-Run Inning Helps Baseball Turn Tables on #20 UNC Pembroke
PEMBROKE, NC -- A night after giving up 11 runs in the fifth, Catawba responded by scoring 13 times in the fifth en route to a 16-10 win over 20th-ranked UNC-Pembroke in baseball action on Wednesday night at Cox Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 21-13, while the Braves fall to 25-10.
In a similar situation as Tuesday's game, UNCP had just scored six runs in the fourth to take a seven-run edge at 9-2. The Indians then used eight hits, four walks, two hit batters, three errors, a passed ball and a wild pitch to plate the 13 runs.
Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) had a double and a triple in the frame to drive in four runs. He started the scoring with a two-run double which was followed by a two-run double by Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS). After a run-scoring single from T.J. Wharton (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Guilford Tech), Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) tied the game with a two-run triple.
Catawba was far from done at that point and took the lead as Brooks scored on a ground out by Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) for the first out of the inning. Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) and Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) brought in runs before Hawks doubled home two more. It could have been more, but the Braves turned an inning-ending double play with bases loaded to end the nearly 45 minute half inning for Catawba.
Zubillaga collected four hits on the night, scoring twice and knocking in two. Kronenfeld and Satterfield each scored three runs, while Hawks picked up four RBI. Daniel Fraga and Ben Schmucker each had three hits for the Braves.
Michael Trombino (Boca Raton, FL/Cavalry Academy) rebounded from a shaky outing Tuesday to get the win by throwing four innings of no-hit ball. He walked one and struck out two to improve to 1-2. Matt Farmakis (Sharpsburg, GA/Northgate HS) got the start for the Indians and allowed three runs on seven hits over three innings.
UNC Pembroke used four pitchers to get out of the fifth inning. Starter Jordan DeLoatch surrendered seven runs on six hits before leaving after facing five batters in the fifth. Brandon Estrain (0-2) and Jonathan Millsaps combined to allow eight runs before Alex Britt finally got the Braves out of the inning. Britt finished the game and gave up just one unearned run on four hits over four and two-thirds innings.
The first six batters for UNCP in the fourth got hits off John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS) before Trombino entered. Four of those hits were doubles, including one by Dalton Knight that drove in two runs.
The Indians were held hitless until the fourth when Kronenfeld led off with a single. Zubillaga had a RBI single in the inning and Satterfield scored on a wild pitch that cut a three-run deficit to 3-2. UNCP answered with its six runs before Catawba exploded in the fifth.
Catawba returns to league action against Mars Hill at home this weekend. The three-game series is set to open Friday night at 6 p.m.
