Indians Split in Matchup with Barton


SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba tennis teams split with the Barton Bulldogs on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Johnson Tennis Center.  The Lady Indians took a 5-4 victory while the men suffered a 6-3 loss.  With the win the Catawba women improve to 12-13 on the year while the Barton women fall to 12-6.  On the men’s side Catawba now stands at 8-16 and Barton at 12-5.

In women’s doubles action Catawba jumped out claiming 8-6 victories in both #1 and #2 duos.  The Lady Bulldogs grabbed their own 8-6 victory at the third flight.  In singles action the competition stayed tight.  Liz Renteria won a three set match at the #1 spot for Catawba.  Barton responded with wins in the next three matchups.  Down 4-3 Catawba would respond with strong victories at the #5 and #6 positions by Alli Prior and Olivia Myers.

After men’s doubles, Barton held onto a 2-1 advantage going into singles play.  The Bulldogs would claim victory by taking the top three matches in singles.  Michael Patch and Iago Montero Nunez won at the #4 and #5 positions.  Nunez fought back after a 6-0 loss in the first set to setup a three set victory with 7-5 and 10-5 scores.

Catawba will play on Wednesday to close out the season at Brevard.  The match starts at 2pm.
