Four Turnovers Help White Stop Blue to Win Football Spring Game 10-7

SALISBURY, NC -- Mark McDaniel caused a fumble after a big run by Cary Littlejohn and the White was able to run out the clock to claim a 10-7 win over the Blue in Catawba’s annual Blue/White Spring Football Game on Saturday at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field.

On a drive after falling behind 10-7, the Blue looked to possibly be driving for a tying or winning score.  BJ Sherrill had bowled his way for 20 yards and a first down at their own 40 then two plays later Littlejohn broke loose for a 40-yard run.  McDaniel made the big play as he stripped Littlejohn and the White recovered with just under four minutes to play.

The White, which had only three first downs at that point, ran off seven plays to run out the clock.  Trey Mashore started the drive with a 20-yard run and Mike Sheehan added one for 14.  Sam Whitley got the final first down with a seven-yard carry.

Another fumble by the Blue had set up the winning field goal early in the final quarter.  CJ Jones had caused the fumble that was recovered by Jason Taylor at the Blue 20.  The White was eventually stopped at the one-yard-line, but Troy Mitchell converted a 29-yard field with 7:45 to go to give the White its 10-7 lead.

The teams were scoreless for nearly the entire first half before the White completed two big pass plays to set up the first score in the final minute of the half.  Sheehan completed passes of 36 and 35 yards to Diante Hodges to the Blue five.  Sheehan ran in from there for a 7-0 lead.

The Blue got on the board midway through the third quarter.  Richard Shuping got the drive started with a 23-yard pass to Dalton Pierce to midfield.  Sherrill would set up the score on a 38-yard pass to Jason Williams to the one.  Sherrill plowed in on the next play to tie the game with 6:00 left in the quarter.

Sherrill threw for 75 yards on 5-of-11 passing.  He ran for 21 yards and the touchdown.  Littlejohn led all rushers with 47 yards on five carries.  The Blue ran for 116 yards and totaled 125 yards in the air.  Williams made three catches for 63 yards and Pierce had three grabs for 34 yards.

Sheehan completed 3-of-8 passes for 79 yards for the White.  He ran for 27 yards and a score.  Mashore picked up 25 yards on the ground.  Hodges had his two catches for 71 yards and Trey Suber had a catch for eight yards.

On defense, McDaniel had an interception to end the first half in addition to the key caused fumble.  Yogi Davis also had an interception for the White.

Kegan Funderburke and Nic Richardson both had a sack and a tackle for loss on defense for the Blue.  Montravius Evans made two stops for losses, while Jalen Forrest also posted a tackle for a loss.

"We are pleased with the strides we made over our 15 days this spring," stated Catawba Head Coach Curtis Walker.  "We are most pleased that we were able to do so injury free.  Today we enjoyed several guys stepping up and making plays.  Our staff is expecting continued growth over the summer months."

Catawba will open its 2014 season on September 6 at Davidson at 7 p.m.
