Volleyball gets first five-game win

WINGATE, NC -- Catawba College junior hitter Rachel LaRoche (Wilmington, DE) had 21 kills and freshman outside hitter Hope Miller (Newton, NC) added 15 kills and a team-high 22 digs as the Lady Indians defeated Wingate University 3-2 (12-30, 30-27, 30-25, 21-30, 15-11) in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Cuddy Arena. Catawba was 0-4 this season in SAC five-game matches enntering tonight's contest. This mark includes a five-game home loss to Wingate on Sept. 12. The Lady Indians are 4-9 overall and 2-6 in the SAC. Wingate falls 18-6 and 5-3 and has a seven-match winning streak end tonight. In the deciding fifth game, Catawba bolted to a 7-2 lead on a successful block by Miller and sophomore hitter Erin Naumann (Lake Wylie, SC). The Lady Indians built on the lead, pushing the margin to 14-7. Wingate tried to rally as it did from a 14-11 deficit against Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday, before winning 16-14. Wingate scored four unanswered points to pull within 14-11 on back-to-back kills by sophomore hitter Lindsay Hinson (Tallahassee, FL). Fittingly, LaRoche ended the match with a kill to give Catawba the victory. The Bulldogs came out of the gates quickly, bolting to a 30-12 first game win. Wingate scored 14 unanswered points to take a 20-5 lead on a Hinson kill. The Bulldogs never looked back in game one. Wingate led 24-22 in game two before Catawba rallied for the win with an 8-3 run. LaRoche had three huge kills during the game-winning rally, including the game winner. The Bulldogs led 20-18 in game three on an ace by junior hitter Stefanie Pickens (Rockville, MD). Catawba finished the game with an 12-5 explosion, climaxed by back-to-back kills by Miller. Pickens lifted Wingate to victory in game four, serving six straight points (including one ace) to give the hosts a 16-8 lead. Hinson had two kills in the 6-0 run, leading Wingate with 25 kills and 28 digs. Catawba had a season-high 24 blocks in the match, led by 11 each from LaRoche and Nauman. Freshman Elizabeth Hewitt (Hickory, NC) added eight. The Lady Indians also had 108 digs and just two service errors in 102 tries.
