SEVIERVILLE, TN -- In less than ideal conditions with temperatures hovering just above freezing, the Catawba women's golf team battled to a sixth place finish at the 2014 South Atlantic Conference Championships.  Individually, Catawba's Madison Kennedy (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS), who shared the lead after two rounds, finished runner-up.  The three-day, three-round event took place at the 5,817-yard, Par-72 Highlands Course at the Sevierville Golf Club.

Kennedy got off to a slow start, playing the first seven holes at six-over-par.  The junior righted the ship and played the last 11 holes at three-over to take second by a shot over Coker's Taylor Demby.  Wingate's Johanna Neumann, who shared the lead with Kennedy after two rounds, fired a 74 to win by seven shots.  That 74 was the lowest round of the three days.

Neumann helped the Bulldogs to the team title by 17 strokes over Coker.  Wingate had a three-round total of 996 to Coker's 1013.  Carson-Newman and Newberry tied for third on 1015, while Queens edged Catawba by a shot for fifth with a 1026 total.

Kennedy earned first team all-tournament honors with her 238 total (78-79-81).  Senior Leslie Long (East Bend, NC/Forbush HS) finished up her career with second team all-tournament honors.  She finished in a tie for seventh place after rounds of 82-83-85 put her on a 250 total.

Long and Kennedy both made five birdies during the tournament, while Neumann led the category with 10.  Kennedy's 27 pars were second best in the field.  Kennedy was second in the tournament in par 5 scoring (5.11), third on par 3s (3.50) and fourth on par 4s (4.61).  Long led the women on the par 4s with a 4.33 average.
