Chandler Enjoys 3-for-6 Afternoon in Softball's Doubleheader Loss to Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- Wingate handed host Catawba a pair of losses, sweeping a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Bulldogs won by the scores of 4-0 and 3-2 as they improve to 32-16 overall and 14-6 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 24-17 and 9-11.
Mellena Helms (Concord, NC) helped spark Wingate. She had a solo home run in the opener then collected three hits and scored two runs in the game two victory. Stacey Houser (Mooresville, NC) won both games for the Bulldogs as she upped her record to 21-7.
Wingate did all its scoring in the first two innings of the opener. In the first inning, an out was followed by a single and three walks to plate the initial run. Shannen Adams (Ayden, NC) delivered a two-out, two-run single to push the lead to 3-0. Helms homered with one out the second to make it 4-0.
Houser did the rest in the opener. She held Catawba without a hit until Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) singled to lead off the sixth. The Lady Indians had two on with two outs after a hit by Holli Chandler (New London, NC/W. Stanly HS), but Houser got a pop up to end the inning. Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, NY/Madison HS) had the other hit to start the seventh.
Adams had two hits in the opener along with Olivia Smith (Chesapeake, VA) for Wingate. Houser gave up the three hits, walked one and struck out three in the opening win. She sat down 13 straight at one point after a two-out walk to Gerone in the first until Hyder's hit in the sixth.
Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) struggled with her control, walking four and allowing three hits before being lifted one batter into the third inning. All four runs were charged to her and she fanned four. Caroline Turner (Kenly, NC/N. Johnston HS) hurled five scoreless innings of relief. She allowed three hits, walked one and recorded four strikeouts.
Helms tripled to start game two and scored on a groundout by Taylor Laskey (Cherryville, NC) to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. After a pair of walks, Tysinger tied it for Catawba on a RBI single in the bottom half of the inning. The Lady Indians grabbed the lead in the third. Chandler led off with a double and scored on a base hit by Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, NC/Bartlett Yancy HS).
Wingate was able to tie the game in the fourth. Kayla Saliga (Asheboro, NC) doubled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Hayley Whitley (Monroe, NC). Helms singled to start the Bulldog fifth, was sacrificed to second, and scored the go-ahead run on a hit by Laskey.
The Lady Indians left a pair of runners in scoring position in the fifth and threatened again in the seventh. Natalie Naturile (Thomasville, NC/E. Davidson HS) singled to start the inning and was sacrificed to second. Pinch-hitter Kelsey Burgess (Charlotte, NC/Gaston Christian HS/N. Greenville) singled sharply to center to put runners on the corners. After a groundout, Houser issued a two-out walk to Shumaker and got Tysinger to ground out to short to end the game.
Helms had three of the seven Wingate hits. Laskey had a pair of RBI. Chandler doubled twice for Catawba.
Houser picked up the win in relief. She tossed four and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing three hits with a pair of walks and a strikeout. Tysinger (17-8) took her second loss of the day in relief. The sophomore gave up one run on two hits with six strikeouts in three and a third innings.
The Lady Indians will close out the regular season on Friday, hosting Brevard for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
