Brooks Improves To 10-2 As Baseball Stays In First With 6-0 Win Over Carson-Newman

SALISBURY, NC -- Junior Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) won his 10th-straight decision, striking out nine in seven shutout innings, to left Catawba to a 6-0 win over visiting Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday afternoon at Newman Park.  The Catawba Indians improve to 27-16 overall and 20-7 in the SAC, while staying in a tie for the league lead.  The Eagles fall to 21-25 and 11-17.

Brooks surrendered just four hits and walked two as he improved to 10-2.  He was backed by an 11-hit attack as Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech), Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS), Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) and T.J. Wharton (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Guilford Tech) all had two hits.

After Brooks struck out the side in the top of the first, the Indians put two runs on the board in the bottom half.  Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) led off with a single and went to second on a failed pickoff attempt.  He came around to score on a single by Hawks.  With Hawks at third following two wild pitches, Satterfield laid down a perfect bunt for a hit to get the second run in.

Brooks sat down the first 10 Eagles batters before issuing a walk to Joe Tipton in the fourth.  Bryan Everhart got the first hit off the junior in the fifth.  Brooks worked around a walk that preceded the hit in the fifth to strand two.  He also stranded a pair in the sixth after two were on with one out by fanning the final two men in the inning.

Kronenfeld beat out a hit with two outs in the fifth, one of his two infield hits in the contest, to plate a third run.  The Indians finally got some breathing room of Carson-Newman starter Dustin Dunagan (2-7) with two runs in the seventh.  Satterfield and Wharton provided back-to-back RBI singles up the middle with two outs.  Dylan Richardson (Randleman, NC/Randleman HS/Appalachian St.) capped the scoring with a home run in the eighth.

Satterfield had the only multi-RBI game for the Indians, driving in a pair of runs.  Houston scored twice.  Michael Trombino (Boca Raton, FL/Calvary Academy) and Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) both had a scoreless inning of relief to keep the shutout.

Dunagan was a workhorse for the Eagles.  He threw 133 pitches in his seven innings on the mound.  He gave up five runs on 10 hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

Weather permitting, the teams are set to finish up the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.  Catawba will also be taking donations for the VS. Cancer Foundation during the game in the fight against childhood cancer.  The team will shave their heads following the final game to show their support for the fight.
