Baseball takes doubleheader from Aquinas

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba swept a doubleheader from visiting St. Thomas Aquinas in baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba took the opener 7-2 and won game two 4-0. The Indians improve to 10-5 on the year. In the opener, Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) had two hits and stole bases to help pace the Tribe. He singled, stole second and scored on Jimbo Davis’ (Salisbury, NC) grounder in the first to give the Indians an early lead. Catawba broke open a 2-2 tie with three runs in the third and added two more in the fourth. Brian Hatley (Salisbury, NC) picked up his fourth win over the season as he scattered five hits over the seven innings. He walked four and struck out five. Three of the five hits against Hatley came in the second inning as Aquinas put together three straight hits to open the inning to plate its two runs. Chris Abernathy (Claremont, NC) tossed a two-hit shutout in the second game. The senior walked six and recorded six strikeouts. He did not allow a hit until the fifth. John Dominski had both hits for Aquinas. Southard collected two more hits, both doubles, in the second game. He opened the game with a double and scored when Blair Reynolds (King, NC) followed with a double. Scott Searles (Boston, MA) had two hits and two RBI in the win. #####
