Adams Drives In Lone Runs As Softball Tops Tusculum 2-0

HARROGATE, TN -- Freshman Caroline Turner (Kenly, NC/N. Johnston HS) and sophomore Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) combined to shutout Tusculum 2-0 to keep Catawba undefeated at the 2014 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon at Neely Field.  The Catawba Indians improve to 26-19 and will face Anderson, the other remaining unbeaten team at the tourney, on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.  Tusculum falls to 31-23 and will face Carson-Newman later on Friday in an elimination game.

The Lady Indians pushed across the only runs of the game in the second inning.  Katherine Shumaker (Blanch, NC/Bartlett Yancy HS) drew a leadoff walk and Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) singled.  After a groundout moved both runners up, Taylor Adams (Smithfield, NC/N. Johnston HS), who had the tie-breaking, two-run single in the 16th-inning last night, came up with another two-run single to give Catawba a 2-0 lead.

Turner and Tysinger made those runs hold up. Turner (5-5) got the start and no-hit Tusculum for the first three innings.  In the fourth, the Pioneers put the first two runners on, but Adams cut down a runner trying to steal third and Turner worked out of the jam.

With one out in the fifth, a pair of singles chased Turner and brought in Tysinger.  The sophomore, who fanned a NCAA II record 27 batters in Thursday’s 16-inning win, ended the frame with a pair of strikeouts.  Tusculum would get the leadoff batter on in both the sixth and seventh, but Tysinger would get the next three out and grabbed her first save.

Turner allowed three hits, walked two and struck out one in her four and a third innings.  Tysinger posted four strikeouts and allowed two hits over the final two and two-thirds innings.
