Late Rally By Newberry Sends Baseball Into Elimination Bracket
FOREST CITY, N.C. -- Catawba saw its easy path through the Food Lion SAC Baseball Tournament come to an end, surrendering a 5-0 lead to Newberry in an eventual 10-7 loss on Friday afternoon at McNair Field. The Wolves avoid elimination, improving to 30-22, and will face Tusculum in an elimination game on Saturday at 3:45. The Catawba Indians, now 29-17, will play an elimination game on Saturday at noon.
Newberry trailed 5-0 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh when the Wolves put together four straight hits to plate a pair of runs and chase Catawba starter John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS). After another single, Ryan Cranmer put Newberry on top with a pinch-hit, three-run homer.
The Wolves added three insurance runs in the eighth and held off a Catawba rally in the ninth. Jake Nidiffer (6-2) picked up the win in relief, working the final two and two-thirds innings.
Newberry pounded out 17 hits in the win. Jermale Page, JoJo Bradley, Mitchell Griffin and D.J. Martinez all had three hits for the Wolves. Albert Baur had two hits and two RBI.
Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) and Malichi Hanes (Charlotte, NC/Butler HS) had doubles in the fifth to get Catawba on the board. Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) and T.J. Wharton (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Guilford Tech) had RBI singles in the sixth to push the margin to 3-0.
Catawba increased its lead to 5-0 in the seventh on singles by Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) and Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech). Newberry then rallied to stay alive.
Kronenfeld had three hits for Catawba, while Hanes had a pair of doubles. Tuttle would allow four runs off 10 hits over six and two-thirds innings in taking a no decision. He walked one and struck out four.
