Baseball falls to Shippensburg

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba fell to visiting Shippensburg 5-1 in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park. Raider hurler Evan Englebrook (Mechanicsburg, PA) allowed eights hits and just a single run over eight innings to even his mark at 1-1. Shippensburg improved to 3-5, while Catawba fell to 10-6. Shippensburg opened the scoring in the third inning, scoring a run on a two-out error by the Tribe. The Catawba starter Zach Snyder (Lexington, NC) avoided further trouble, recording a strikeout to end the frame with the bases loaded. The Raiders threatened again in the fourth with consecutive singles to start the inning, but C.J. Gainey (Martinsburg, WV) grounded to third into a triple play to end the inning. Catawba would tie the game in the fifth as with two outs Blair Reynolds (King, NC) singled and Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) doubled. Reynolds would score on a wild pitch, but Hill was erased at the plate, trying to score on an bad throw on the same play. Shippensburg would plate the winning run in the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Matt DeSanto (Williamsport, PA). The Raiders added three unearned runs in the eighth for insurance. Jared Krebs (Spring Grove, PA), Nick Erdman (Leola, PA) and Scott Kintz (Mechanicsburg, PA) had two hits for Shippensburg. Reynolds, Hill and Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) had two hits for Catawba. #####
