Two Big Innings Propel Baseball to 11-4 Win Over #15 USC Aiken
AIKEN, SC -- Catawba scored 10 runs over the final five innings to overcome an early deficit and knock off #15 USC Aiken 11-4 in baseball action on Friday night at Hernandez Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 33-17, while the Pacers fall to 35-14.
Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) had a big game for the Indians with three hits and three RBI, while Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) and Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill, SC) each had two hits. T.J. Wharton (Lutz, FL/Bishop McLaughlin HS/Guilford Tech) hit his 10th home run of the year and Jon Wallace (Salisbury, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Lynchburg) scored three runs after drawing four walks.
Catawba used a 10-hit attack to back six strong innings from John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/A.L. Brown HS). The senior improved to 7-2 on the year, yielding just four hits over six innings. He was relieved after walking a batter and hitting a man to start the seventh. Tuttle recorded six strikeouts.
USC Aiken grabbed the lead on a two-run home run by Ryan Metzler in the bottom of the second. Aiken got the last of its four hits off Tuttle in the second inning as the senior would retire 11 in a row before walking a man to start the sixth.
While Tuttle kept the Pacer bats silent, Catawba's offense went to work. Down 2-1 in the fifth, Brooks led off with a single and Wallace walked. Beard tied the game with a single and Wallace scored on an error to give the Indians a 3-2 lead. Houston doubled home his second run of the game and Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS), who joined Houston with three RBI, added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-2.
Catawba was back at it in the seventh, scoring five more runs. Wallace and Beard walked to start the inning and after Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest/Georgia Tech) was intentionally walked, Hawks doubled home two runs though Kronenfeld was erased at the plate. Wharton capped the inning with a two-run homer.
Matt Farmakis (Sharpsburg, GA/Northgate HS) gave up a double and a RBI groundout after taking over for Tuttle, but got out of the inning without any more damage and worked a perfect eighth. He fanned three in two innings.
Matt Bosse had two of the six hits for Aiken. Metzler had two RBI and scored twice. Derek Beasley (6-3), who was trying to tie the Pacer record for career wins, took the loss. He allowed six runs, five earned, off five hits over six innings. He struck out six.
The teams will finish up the two-game series with a 2 p.m. game on Saturday. The Indians will then be idle until the NCAA II Southeast Regional which starts on May 15. The site of the regional will be announced next weekend with Lander currently holding the top spot in the region.
