Baseball splits doubleheader with Shippensburg

SALISBURY, NC Catawba and visiting Shippensburg split a doubleheader in baseball action on Monday afternoon at Newman Park. Catawba took the opener 16-5, while the Raiders won the second game 9-1. Catawba now stands at 11-7 on the year, while Shippensburg is 4-6. Catawba broke open the first game by scoring 10 runs in the second inning. The first eight Tribe batters reached base on seven hits and a walk. Scott Searles (Boston, MA) and Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) had two-run singles to give Catawba a 4-1 lead. Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) followed a Blair Reynolds (King, NC) sacrifice fly with anoth two-run hit for a 7-1 edge. Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) plated a run with a groundout and Aaron Rimer (Salisbury, NC) capped the inning with a two-run homer. Shippensburg closed within 12-5 in the fourth, scoring four times. One run scored on a sacrifice fly, while the other three scored on bases loaded walks. Catawba would add a run in its fourth and two in the sixth to expand its advantage to 15-5. Scott Dunning (Charlotte, NC) earned the win in relief for Catawba, allowing just one hit in three and two-thirds innings. Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) led the Tribe attack, going 4-for-6 with three runs scored. Searles had three hits, while Rimer had four RBI. Jared Krebs (Spring Grove, PA) and Nick Erdman (Leloa, PA) collected two hits for Shippensburg. The Raiders scored four times in the third inning of the second game to grab the advantage. Scott Kintz (Mechanicsburg, PA) scored the initial run during a rundown on a pickoff play. A pair of doubles was followed by a two-run homer by Krebs for the 4-0 edge. The Raiders added single runs over the next three innings and two more in the seventh on bases loaded walks. Lee McClintock (Carlisle, PA) surrendered just two hits over six innings to improve to 1-2. He walked two and recorded five strikeouts. The Raiders collected 13 hits in the win, with Kintz, Krebs, Chad Stecker (Saylorsburg, PA), Andy Dangler (Chambersburg, PA) and Josh Bell (Loysville, PA) each getting two hits. #####
