Sands Called Up by Tampa Bay
Former Catawba baseball standout Jerry Sands in back in the Major Leagues. The Tampa Bay Rays have called up Sands after putting Wil Myers on the 15-day disabled list. Sands will make his Tampa Bay debut today at Fenway Park vs. the Boston Red Sox and will bat clean up as the designated hitter. First pitch is set for 1:35 pm.
Sands played part of two seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2011 and 2012. He batted .244 with four homers and 27 RBI in 70 games with the Dodgers. Sands was traded to the Red Sox following the 2012 season, but was then delt a few months later to the Pittsburg Pirates. He played with the Pirates AAA club in Indianapolis last year before going to Tampa Bay.
At Durham, Sands was hitting .268 with nine home runs in 54 games. He had added 12 doubles and collected 36 RBI.
