Rivera's three doubles sparks Softball to split at Mt. Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, NC -- Catawba College and host Mount Olive split a doubleheader in softball action on Tuesday afternoon at Cassell Field. Mount Olive took the opener 3-2, while Catawba the second game 14-1. The Lady Indians now stand at 8-6 this season, while Mount Olive is 1-2.Mount Olive scored all three of its runs in the opener in the second inning. A two-out single plated the first run, while an error allowed the final two runs to score. Catawba got a run back in the third on a RBI single by Val McDowell (Crofton, MD), then trimmed the deficit to a single run on a double by Katie Phelps (Prince Frederick, MD). That would be all the Lady Indians would get as they fell by one run. McDowell and Phelps each had two hits in the opener. Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) allowed just one eaerned run on seven hits in her six innings in falling to 3-3 on the year. Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) improved to 3-1 with the win in game two. She scattered five hits and had seven strikeouts. McDowell singles and later scored on a wild pitch to give Catawba a 1-0 lead after an inning. Catawba added a second run in the third as Jessica Rivers (Key West, FL) doubled and scored on an error. Mount Olive closed the gap with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Catawba sent 15 batters to plate in the seven, scoring 12 runs to take control. Rivera doubled twice in the inning, including one that cleared the bases. Rivera and Liz Corbett (Severn, MD) each collected three hits in the win. #####
