Baseball falls at Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, NC – Catawba fell to host Belmont Abbey 7-3 in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Crusader Field. The Indians outhit Belmont Abbey 10-8, but stranded 10 runners on base. Catawba falls to 11-8, while the Crusaders improve to 4-11. Blair Reynolds (King, NC) staked the Tribe to an early lead with a solo home run in the first, but the Crusaders struck for three runs in their second to take control. Derek Brown’s two-run single started the scoring. Belmont Abbey increased its lead to 5-1 on a solo shot by Josh Cobb in the seventh. The Indians rallied in the eighth after two were out. The first run scored on an error, while Chris Foy (South Mills, NC) singled home the second run to close the gap to 5-3. Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) followed with a single, but Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) hit into a fielder’s choice to end the inning. Belmont Abbey answered in its eighth on a two-run double by Josh Pennington. Freshman Nick Mayle (Landis, NC) made the start for Catawba, his first of the season, and took the loss. He allowed five hits and three earned runs in his three innings of work. Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) tossed four excellent inning of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out six. Reynolds, Lefko and Scott Searles (Boston, NC) led the offense, each collecting a pair of hits. #####
