No. 7: Baseball wins 15 of last 17 SAC games to grab share of league title
After a slow start, the Catawba baseball team reeled off 15 wins in its final 17 league games to take a share of the South Atlantic Conference Championship. It marked the second straight year for a title by the Indians and the seventh since 2004.
Catawba dropped its opening two conference games at Brevard and were 1-3 after a doubleheader split with Newberry. When the Indians dropped the first two games of the series at Lincoln Memorial, Catawba was 5-5 in the SAC and three games behind LMU and Wingate.
The Indians salvaged the final game of the LMU series then swept series from Anderson and Coker. Catawba took the first two games at Wingate and left that series a game and half behind LMU and a half game behind the Bulldogs.
As Catawba swept Mars Hill in its next series, LMU lost one of three games at Coker. Wingate was idle letting the Indians move into second by a game, just a half game behind the Railsplitters. In the next to last weekend, Catawba won two of three at Tusculum, losing a heart-breaker 9-8 in 13 innings. Wingate swept Carson-Newman and LMU dropped two of three at Anderson to fall out of first.
Catawba and Wingate entered the final weekend tied and a half game ahead of LMU. The Indians would host Carson-Newman while Wingate hosted LMU. Catawba and Wingate both won on Friday to remain tied. Heavy rains hit the area on Saturday forcing the cancellation of the remaining games, leaving the two teams to share the crown.
