No. 6: Football upsets tenth-ranked Carson-Newman on late touchdown
Catawba went nearly the length of the field in the final two minutes to knock off 10th-ranked Carson-Newman 25-22 at Jefferson City. After the score, the Indians partially blocked a field goal attempt by the Eagles on the final play.
Down 22-19, and backed up at their own 12 with just 2.20 remaining, Catawba responded by driving for the winning score. The final drive started with three incomplete passes, but Danny O’Brien found Bruce Smith for an 18-yard gain on fourth down. O’Brien followed with completions to Nate Charest (13 yards) and Tyler Hamilton (45 yards) to the Eagle 12.
O’Brien then completed a pass to Quan Rucker for what would have been a touchdown, but it was called back for holding. O’Brien was sacked on the next play taking the ball back to the C-N 34. On second down, O’Brien found Carlos Tarrats down the seam for the winning score.
The point after attempt was blocked, leaving the Eagles down just three with 56 seconds left. Carson-Newman moved to the Catawba 16 and set up for a tying field goal. LJ McCray was able to get a hand on the attempt to help send the kick wide to preserve the win for Catawba.
