Football Practice Report: Day 5

Catawba had its first full gear practice on Sunday night and it turned into quite an intense one.  There were several competition periods (11 on 11, skelly and a redzone challenge).  A spirited battle between veteran defensive lineman CJ Barksdale and freshman offensive lineman Quinzavious Sands has become very competitive.

“Having Barks (Barksdale) back this season will give our defensive front a tremendous boost,” exclaimed Head Coach Curtis Walker.  “We are excited with what Sands has shown during camp.”

Different aspects of special teams have been worked into practices with Special Teams Coordinator Chris Collins focusing on punt and kickoff returns on Sunday.  Coach Walker stated that they are trying to identify the best personnel for each unit.

Chad Hollandsworth, who handled both punting and kicking duties for most of last season, has looked good in the preseason.  “Chad has looked as comfortable as I have seen him,” said Walker.  “He has shown confidence in punting and kicking.”

The team will have both a morning and an evening practice on Monday.
