Volleyball Begins Season on Friday in Charlotte at Queens Tournament
Catawba will open its 2014 volleyball season at the Queens Fall Invitational this weekend in Charlotte, N.C. The Catawba Indians are set to play two matches on Friday and Saturday at 10:30 am and 5:15 pm each day.
The Lady Indians will look to turn around a 4-20 season a year ago. Catawba does return all of the statistical leaders from last year. Junior setter Kaytee Frabotta led the way in assists (717) and aces (27). Sophomore Bri Howard recorded the most kills (158) and sophomore McKenzie Garrison posted the most digs (238). Sophomore Erin Morant registered the most blocks (65).
Catawba will open the season on Friday morning against the University of Sioux Falls from South Dakota. It will be the first-ever matchup with the Cougars. The second match on Saturday pits the Lady Indians against Limestone. Catawba has defeated the Saints in seven of eight previous meetings with the loss coming in 1984.
On Saturday, Catawba faces a pair of regional battles with Peach Belt Conference foes. The morning match is against GRU Augusta, while the ladies face Armstrong in their final match. Catawba holds an 11-2 mark all-time versus Augusta, but the Jaguars have won two of the last three, including the most recent meeting in 2012. Armstrong leads the Catawba series 9-4 and has won six straight which started with the 2008 Southeast Region Championship match.
Catawba will face Pfeiffer for its home opener on September 9th. The bulk of the home slate for the Lady Indians starts in October as Catawba plays nine of its last 15 in Goodman Gym.
