Women's Soccer Heads South to Open 2014 Season on Friday
Catawba’s women’s soccer team will open its 2014 campaign with a swing south for a pair of matches. First up is a regional tilt at Armstrong Atlantic State University on Friday afternoon at 3:30 in Savannah, Ga. The ladies will then travel to St. Augustine’s, Fla., to face Palm Beach Atlantic on Sunday.
Catawba returns eight starters from last season’s 10-8-1 squad. Two of those were top scorers in Mary Kirkman and Sophie Waller. Kirkman led the team with seven goals and added four assists. Waller tallied three goals with a team-high eight assists. Both were selected to the South Atlantic Conference preseason team along with Alex Hulsey.
The Lady Indians have not beaten Armstrong in four previous tries. The last meeting came in 2011 when the Pirates claimed a 3-2 win overtime at Frock Field. The ladies are also winless against Palm Beach Atlantic, falling 2-1 in 2011 and 1-0 in overtime in 2012.
Catawba will face Anderson in its home opener on September 13th, the lone home match over the first six contests. The Lady Indians will then enjoy a stretch of seven home matches over an 11 game stretch starting on September 24th.
