Football Renews Davidson Rivalry to Open 2014 Campaign

Catawba will renew one of its oldest football rivalries on Saturday to open up the 2014 season. The Indians will travel to Davidson to face the Wildcats at 7 pm.
The Wildcats were the first team on record to play Catawba back in 1907, claiming a 20-7 win in that contest. Davidson leads the all-time series 17-5, but the Indians won the final three meetings before the series was dropped after the 1987 season.
Catawba has a host of quality returners on both sides of the ball this season. The starting offensive line is intact from last season and the Indians have its top three running back returning as well. The bulk of the defense returns on the line, in the secondary and at linebacker.
Senior Taylor Fender anchors the offensive line that produced 47 starts among the unit. Cary Littlejohn was the top rusher last season with 574 yards. Mike Sheehan, who helped rally the team in the final quarter at North Greenville last season before starting the final game, will get the nod at quarterback and has four of last season’s top five receivers returning.
On defense, top tackler Jason Taylor is back after recording 105 stops last year. The line returns all-conference and all-region performer Jonathan Jean as well as welcoming back CJ Barksdale and Kegan Funderburk, who missed last season. Mark McDaniel leads the secondary that returns three starters and adds Coastal Carolina transfer Philip George.
Catawba faces three road tests before coming home to Shuford Stadium to tangle with nationally-ranked Carson-Newman on September 27th.
