Hopper Leads Volleyball to Split of Opening Matches
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Catawba split its opening day volleyball matches at the Queens Fall Invitational on Friday at the Levine Center. The Catawba Indians to fell in four sets in a morning match to Sioux Falls and came back to beat Limestone in four in an afternoon tilt. The Lady Indians are 1-1 on the season. It was the opener for Sioux Falls and Limestone fell to 0-2.
Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) reached double figures in kills to lead Catawba in both matches. She had a dozen in the 25-23, 18-24, 9-25, 18-25 loss to Sioux Falls and 15, along with 13 digs, in the 25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14 win over Limestone.
Catawba hit just 3.4% against Sioux Falls and Hopper was the only player to reach double digits in kills. Meredith Furr (concord, N.C./Cox Mill HS) dug up eight balls and Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) handed out 20 assists.
In the first set, Catawba trailed 18-13 before three straight kills from Hopper sparked a five-point run to tie the set. Another kill from Hopper put the Lady Indians up 20-19. The Cougars scored four straight to get the lead back, but a kill from Brown got Catawba even at 23-all. After an error, Brown killed off the set.
Catawba stayed close until the middle of set two when the Cougars pulled away. With the set tied at 12-12, Sioux Falls reeled off six consecutive points. Jordan Calef and Emily Johnson each had two kills in the run. Johnson later added three kills as the lead went to 24-15.
Calef and Johnson led the set three charge for the Cougars. Calef had her six set kills early in helping to a 13-7 lead. Johnson totaled five kills in the set, including four straight to make the score 20-9.
Sioux Falls kept the momentum into the final set, surging to an 11-3 lead. It was 20-11 before Catawba made a run to close within 20-16. The Cougars held off the rally to take the match.
Against Limestone, Bri Howard (Burlington, N.C./S. Alamance HS) followed Hopper with 11 kills and Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) chipped in with 10 kills. The Lady Indians recorded 10 blocks as a team with Ashley Brown (Hendersonville, N.C./N. Henderson HS) collecting five and Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) four.
The Lady Indians jumped out to a 10-5 lead in set one after kills from Gallup and Howard and a combo block from Morant and Frabotta. An ace by Hopper later in the set pushed the margin to 20-11. Limestone edged back into the set, pulling within 21-17 after an ace from Darla Svoboda. Two kills from Howard put Catawba on top 24-18 before the Saints reeled off five straight, including a pair of aces from Mary Kate Katarzynski. Morant answered after a timeout with the set-winning kill.
Frabotta served two early aces to help Catawba roll to a 9-3 lead in set two. Hopper would again make it 20-11 on a kill and this time Catawba held a comfortable edge the rest of the set. It was Morant once again that killed off the final point of the set.
Catawba started fast in the third set, taking an 8-3 lead, but Limestone recovered and pulled even at 17-all after two kills from Katarzynski. A kill from Morant sparked a three-point run for Catawba, but again Limestone rallied back to tie at 22-22. Katarzynski followed with an ace and Rycki Ebert killed off the final two points for the Saints.
The Lady Indians trailed early in the final set, but two kills from Howard sandwiched around a kill from Hopper put Catawba up 9-8. Later, Howard combined on a block with Morant and put down a kill to stretch the lead to 15-8. Catawba pulled away from there and Gallup killed off the final point.
Catawba continues action at the Queens Fall Invitational on Saturday with a morning tilt against GRU Augusta followed by an afternoon match against Armstrong.
