Bonilla Leads the Indians Past #19 Barton
SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Catawba College men's soccer team defeated the #19 Barton Bulldogs 3-2 Wednesday night at Frock Field. Catawba's Kenny Bonilla led the way for the Indians scoring a goal and tallying two assists on the night. The win marks the first of the season for the tribe who are now 1-2 on the year. Barton falls to 2-1 with the loss.
The Indians entered halftime with a 2-0 advantage over the nationally ranked Bulldogs. The first goal came in the 20th minute when Ian Orr put in a rebound after Bonilla's initial shot was saved. Bonilla would mark his second assist of the night when he attacked from the right side of the field before finding Phillip Hollenhorst in the middle of the field in front of the net.
Barton would quickly respond in the second half with a quick give and go between Jonathan Rembecki and Erik Pajunk to bring the score back to 2-1 in favor of the Indians. Rembecki's goal came just three minutes into the second half.
In the 58th minute, Bonilla was the benefactor of a breakaway goal that he chipped over the head of Barton keeper, Jens Madsen Hordvik. Brian Woulfe earned the assist on the goal after intercepting a Bulldog goal kick and lobbing the ball ahead to Bonilla.
Barton would make the game close with a goal off a corner kick that found its way past the Catawba defense but the Indians were able to close out the game to claim the victory.
Christian Watts, the Catawba keeper, earned the win for the Indians recording two saves on the night. Hordvick would also save two shots for the Bulldogs in the loss.
Catawba and Barton were even in several statistical categories on the night as both recorded 13 shots and the two saves. Catawba gained the advantage in corner kicks by a margin of 7-3.
The Indians return to Frock Field to open South Atlantic Conference play against Anderson on Saturday night. The Catawba men are set to kickoff at 7:30pm.
