Football Makes Trek to Western Carolina For Its Week 2 Match-Up
Catawba football hits the road for its longest trip of the season to play Western Carolina on Saturday. This will be the first meeting with the Catamounts since the days that Greg Singleton and Ike Hill wore Indian blue. Western Carolina took that meeting back in 1969, 22-16. The schools first met in 1933 with Catawba dominating the early games, winning the first 10 contests.
Catawba topped Davidson last weekend, winning its opener under Head Coach Curtis Walker for the second year in a row. Mike Sheehan was efficient guiding the offense and was named the league Player of the Week. The sophomore hit on 12-of-13 passes for 174 yards three touchdowns.
One of the biggest plays of the game was turned in by linebacker Jamal Lackey, who intercepted a pass midway through the first quarter and returned it 67 yards for the game’s first score. Sheehan followed with his three touchdown strikes to put Catawba on top 28-0 at the break.
The Indians rolled up nearly 500 yards of offense with 310 coming on the ground. Trey Mashore topped the rushers with 78 yards on eight carries. Sheehan added 56 yards on the ground, while David Burgess totaled 51.
Western Carolina rebounded from an opening loss to claim a 45-21 victory over Brevard last week. The Catamounts pulled away late, scoring 17 points in the final 18 minutes after Brevard had closed within 28-21.
The Catamounts piled up 283 yards rushing with Detrez Newsome and Darius Ramsey each running for 88 yards. Quarterback Troy Mitchell ran for 84 yards and threw for another 142. He put up similar numbers as Sheehan, completing 13-of-15 passes, but no touchdowns.
Western went to the air more in the opener against South Florida, throwing 67 times for nearly 400 yards. Terryon Robinson and Willie Police have been the top targets. Robinson has 18 catches over the two games, while Police has 17 receptions.
The Catamounts have yet to record a sack on defense, but Ace Clark has an interception and two stops for losses. Caleb Hawkins has made two and a half tackles for losses.
Kickoff for the game is set for 3:30 at Bob Waters Field. Catawba will leave campus on Friday to make the trip to Cullowhee.
