Baker's 11 RBI propel Baseball to doubleheader sweepSALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College opened South Atlantic Conference baseball play with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Mars Hill on Saurday afternoon at Newman Park. The Indians won by the scores of 19-6 and 13-6 to improve to 13-8 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. Mars Hill fell to 2-12 and 0-2. The Indians broke open the first game with a six-run second inning. Scott Searles (Boston, MA) had homered in the first for Catawba, then Jimbo Davis (Salisbury, NC) led off the second with a solo shot. The first eight Tribe batters reached base in the inning as Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) collected a two-run double and Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) a two-run single in the frame. In the fourth, Matt Baker (Charlotte, NC) connected for his second grand slam of the season to stake Catawba to an 11-1 lead. Chris DiMenna (Severna Park, MD) capped a four-run sixth for Mars Hill with a three-run homer as the Lions battled back to within 12-6. The Indians would add five runs in the seventh and two more in the eight for the win. Baker highlighted the Tribe attack in the opener, going 4-for-5, including the homer and two doubles, with seven RBI. Nick Lefko (Faith, NC) was also 4-for-5 and had three RBI. Zach Snyder (Lexington< C) tossed seven innings to improve his mark to 4-1. He allowed six runs on eight hits and registered eight strikeouts. The Indians used an eight-run second to take control of the second game. Catawba led 3-1 after an inning, but Mars Hill scored three times in its second, two on a single by Brandon Haney (Orlando, FL). A Lion throwing error on an attempted sacrifice helped open a big second inning for the Tribe. The first seven Indian batters would reach base and Searles put the Tribe up for good with a two-run double. Baker had a three-run homer during the inning, adding to a very productive day for the sophomore. He was 2-for-3 in the second game with four RBI. Mark Smith (Browns Summitt, NC) picked up the win in relief. He tossed three innings, allowing just two hits and one run with three strikeouts. Justin Mahon (Ft. Myers, FL) was 3-for-4 in game two for Mars Hill. He homered in each game, totaling three RBI and scoring five runs. #####
