Volleyball Home For Two Matches This Weekend
Catawba’s volleyball team will host a pair of South Atlantic Conference matches this weekend. The Lady Indians will face Lincoln Memorial on Friday night at 7 pm then Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm.
Catawba has played just one home match in the young season, a 3-0 sweep of Pfeiffer last week. The Lady Indians were swept by 12th-ranked Wingate on Tuesday in their SAC opener, but gave the nationally-ranked Bulldogs a battle to the final point, losing 29-27 in the final set.
Sophomore Alex Hopper is leading the team in kills after six matches, averaging 2.6 per set. That currently ranks ninth in the SAC. She has 55 on the year and posted 11 in the loss to Wingate. Bri Howard, Ashley Brown and Rachel Gallup each average about one and half kills per set.
Blocking has been a big asset for Catawba this year. Erin Morant ranks second in the SAC with her 21 blocks which is just over one a set. Brown has posted 17 blocks.
Catawba enters the weekend with a 2-4 record and a 0-1 mark in the SAC. Lincoln Memorial is 5-4 overall and 1-0 in the league, defeating Mars Hill on Tuesday. Carson-Newman stands at 5-3 overall and 1-0 in SAC play and will face Queens on Friday before invading Goodman Gym.
