Lady Indians Ranked #12 in NCAA in Last NSCAA Poll
SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College women’s soccer team was featured in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll which was announced on Tuesday afternoon. The Lady Indians were named #12 in the nation for all NCAA-II and second in the Southeast region.
The twelfth seeded Catawba rank are the only South Atlantic Conference team to rank in the top 25. In the Southeast regional poll, Catawba trails Columbus State who has suffered a 4-2 loss since the poll was released.
Catawba is currently 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. Previously ranked 14th in the nation as of last week, the Indians went 2-0 on the week. The first win came on Wednesday with a 4-0 victory over Mount Olive. On Saturday, the Lady Indians hosted Anderson for their home and South Atlantic Conference opener of the season. Catawba routed the Trojans to a score of 5-0.
The Lady Indians are currently led in scoring by freshmen Kate Weisner and Becky Frost. Weisner currently ranks #3 in the NCAA in goals and #5 in goals per game with seven. The mark also ranks first in the South Atlantic Conference. Frost sits just behind Weisner with six goals of her own. Frost’s total ranks eighth in the NCAA in goals scored and second in conference.
In addition to the strong freshman play, Catawba features three preseason all-conference performers in Mary Kirkman, Sophie Waller and Alex Hulsey. Kirkman was named to the all-conference first team and currently leads the Indians with four assists. Waller, a second team midfielder, led Catawba in 2013 with eight assists and has currently tallied one on the year. Hulsey has already recorded a goal and two assists on the year for a total of four points, half of last year’s total mark. In goal the Indians anchored by Bethany Davis who has two combined shutouts on the year with fellow keeper Angelica Pawlowski.
This week, Catawba have already claimed a 2-1 overtime win at host UNC Pembroke. Saturday will mark the second South Atlantic Conference matchup of the season as the women travel to Carson-Newman. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
