Volleyball Drops 3-0 Match to Carson-Newman
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Carson-Newman downed host Catawba in three sets in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Eagles won the match 25-21, 25-13, 25-11 to improve to 7-3 overall and 3-0 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 2-6 and 0-3.
Carson-Newman was led by Rachel Harper, who had 13 kills, four aces and three blocks, and Jenna Wilson, who had 11 kills and four blocks. The Eagles had 11 blocks as a team with Kiayna O’Neal posting a team-high six. C-N also served up 10 aces.
Junior Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) led Catawba on the day with six kills and four blocks. Catawba matched C-N at the net with 11 blocks. Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) collected six and Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) joined Gallup with four blocks.
The Eagles took control of the match early in set one. Down 6-3, Carson-Newman went on an 11-2 run that put C-N up 14-8. Sara Fairley served three aces in the spurt for the Eagles. The lead moved to 21-13 before Catawba made it interesting by pulling within 23-21. Following a timeout, Wilson had a kill and Taylor Lowe an ace to end the set.
Carson-Newman jumped to a 10-3 lead in set two and held a comfortable lead throughout. The third set followed in a similar fashion with the Eagles going up 13-3 after back-to-back combo blocks from O’Neal and Fairly.
Next up for Catawba will be a trip to Hartsville, S.C. on Tuesday for a match-up with Coker at 7 p.m.
