JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Karen Presnell and Mary Kirkman combined in the last ten minutes of the game to score two goals to lift the #12 Catawba Lady Indians over South Atlantic Conference foe Carson-Newman 2-1 Saturday evening in women's soccer action at McCowan field.  The Lady Indians remain undefeated and now stand 6-0 overall and 2-0 in the SAC.  Carson Newman falls to 2-4 and 0-2 in the conference.

Down by a goal, with ten minutes remaining, Catawba's Presnell received a pass on the far side of the net giving her a one-on-one opportunity against the Eagles keeper, Katy Hill.  Presnell pounded the ball to the back of the net past a diving Hill to tie the game at one.  The goal marked Presnell's third of the season.

Catawba's endurance began with show as the Indians started winning more hustle plays over the tired Carson-Newman squad.  A few minutes later with four minutes remaining, the Catawba midfield continued to push up and forced Carson Newman to pass the ball to the back line.  The pass was intercepted by a streaking Kirkman who out ran the Carson-Newman defense and keeper.  Kirkman’s shot bounced off the far post before rolling into the net.  The goal proved to be the game winner and Kirkman’s second goal on the season.

Bethany Davis recorded five saves in the net for the Lady Indians after facing six shots on goal for the day.  Catawba would place eleven shots of their own on goal with nine being saved by Hill.

The game was physically played as the Indians recorded 11 fouls and Carson-Newman was called for 13.

Catawba coach Michael Swan added after the game, "It's a tough place to play, especially against a tough team like Carson Newman.  I am extremely proud of how the girls faced the adversity and were opportunistic in the end. We dug really deep today to get the win.  It's hard to single out players but I thought on both goals Karen and Mary showed that quality."

Catawba will return home to Frock Field for their next game as they host SAC rival, Wingate, at 5 p.m.
