Sheehan and Taylor Named SAC AstroTurf Football Players of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) -- Catawba College claimed two of the three South Atlantic Conference AstroTurf Football Players of the Week honors for games played the third week of the season which was announced on Monday. Catawba quarterback Mike Sheehan was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week, while Catawba Indian linebacker Jason Taylor was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Carson-Newman returner Lonnie Williams picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Sheehan, a sophomore from Wilmington, N.C., passed for a pair of scores and ran for another to lead the Catawba Indians to a 37-34 double-overtime win over Conference foe Newberry on Sept. 20. He connected on 15-of-26 attempts, including an 11-yard strike to Carlos Tarrats in the second overtime to finish with 241 yards through the air. On the ground, Sheehan went for 26 yards on 15 carries. His longest run of the game came on a 23 yard score in the third quarter. He finished the week with a 57.7 completion percentage and 9.3 yards per pass. The honor marks his second Offensive Player of the Week nod this season.
Taylor, a senior from Bahama, N.C., posted a career-high 16 tackles in Catawba’s win over Newberry. He amassed 14 solo tackles, including a pair of tackles for loss for seven yards. Three of his tackles came in the overtime periods. The honor is his first Defensive Player of the Week plaudit this season.
Williams, a redshirt-freshman from Philadelphia, Pa., took the opening kickoff back 100 yards for a score and set a pair of Carson-Newman records in the Eagles’ 55-42 win over League foe Brevard on Sept. 20. The 100 yard return marked Carson-Newman’s first 100 yard return for a score since 1992, the fourth such return in school history. He posted five returns for a school-record 215 yards. His 43 yard average per return in the contest currently ranks him seventh on the Carson-Newman single game list. He is first among players with five returns in a single game.
