Gallup Paces Volleyball to First League Win
HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- Catawba swept past host Coker to claim its first South Atlantic Conference volleyball match of the season on Tuesday night at the DeLoach Center. The Catawba Indians picked up the win 25-18, 25-23, 25-20 to improve to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 3-7 and 0-4.
Junior Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) had a big night for the Lady Indians with 13 kills and a pair of blocks. Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) also reached double figures in kills with 11, while Ashley Brown (Hendersonville, N.C./N. Henderson HS) recorded four blocks.
Catawba found itself down in both of the first two sets. Coker ran out to a 10-6 lead in the opening set before the Lady Indians pushed back. A kill and ace by Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) and a kill from Howard pulled Catawba within 10-9 then a block by Brown and Haley Lanier (Burgaw, N.C./Pender Co. HS) tied the set at 11-all. Lanier and Gallup followed with kills and Catawba led the rest of the set.
Coker closed to 18-17 on a kill from Christen Bragg, but kills from Lanier and Rachel Stanford (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee HS) started a 6-0 run to get the Lady Indians to set point. After a kill from Madison Bingle, Howard responded with a kill to win the set.
The Cobras appeared to heading to a split of the first two sets, grabbing an early 7-3 lead then surging to an 18-9 margin in a 7-0 run that included three aces from Bingle. Catawba chipped away, scoring five of the next six points to make it 19-14. Down 22-18, Catawba ran off four points to pull even then got a kill from McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS) and a hitting error to steal the set.
The third set was back-and-forth with 15 ties. The last came on a kill from Howard to make it 18-18. Gallup ignited Catawba with consecutive kills then teamed with Brown for a pair of blocks to put the Lady Indians up 22-18. The teams alternated point from there with a Coker hitting error providing the final point.
Bingle set the pace for the Cobras with 12 kills, 11 digs and three aces. Loren Hill picked up nine kills, 10 digs and two aces, while Bragg handed our 29 assists with a pair of aces.
Libero Taylor Houser (Mt. Holly, N.C./S. Point HS/Pfeiffer) collected nine digs for Catawba. Setters Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II HS) and Stanford handed out 21 and 17 assists, respectively.
Catawba will stay on the road for a pair of SAC matches this weekend. The Lady Indians will face Mars Hill on Friday night at 7 pm and Tusculum Saturday afternoon at 2 pm.
