Catawba Suffers 4-1 Loss to Wingate
SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College women’s soccer team suffered a 4-1 loss to Wingate University on Wednesday evening at Frock Field. The loss marked Catawba’s first of the year for a 6-1 record and 2-1 in the South Atlantic Conference. Wingate improves to 2-2-2 overall and 2-1 in the SAC.
Samantha Leonard led the charge for Wingate after scoring the only goal in the first half. The goal came in the 40th minute after ripping the ball to the left of Catawba goalie, Bethany Davis.
At the start of the second half, Wingate’s Kaitlyn Brunworth needed only two minutes to double Wingate’s lead.
Catawba would respond midway through the second half with the eighth goal of the season for freshman Kate Weisner. The goal came after an Erin Feldman long ball that was headed in the air by a Wingate defender. Weiser collected the loose ball and powered in the goal from the top of the box.
Wingate would go on to add two quick goals in the final minutes of the game. The goals came from Leonard and Taylor Leyble.
Catawba Head Coach Michael Swan said, “We were second best tonight. I thought individually they showed more drive to win the game over 90 minutes. During the second half I felt we came back into the game and if a couple of key decisions went our way it may have been different. But all credit to wingate they battled well and took their chances. We have to regroup and get ready for a big one Saturday.”
Catawba returns to action on Saturday as the Lady Indians host Newberry at Frock Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
