Volleyball Continues Its Early Stretch Of Away Matches This Weekend
Catawba’s volleyball team is back on the road this weekend with matches at Mars Hill and Tusculum. The Lady Indians enter the weekend with a 3-6 overall record and are 1-3 in the South Atlantic Conference.
Catawba is coming off its first league win on Tuesday in a sweep of Coker. Rachel Gallup posted 13 kills to lead the Lady Indians with Bri Howard adding 11. Ashley Brown totaled four blocks and chipped in with six kills.
Blocking has been a strong area of play for the Lady Indians, ranking 22nd in NCAA II at 2.38 blocks per set. Two Catawba players, Erin Morant and Ashley Brown, rank among the top five in the SAC in blocks. Morant has recorded 1.12 blocks per set with Brown posting 1.03 a set. Entering the week, Morant was 37th in NCAA II with Brown ranking 79th.
Alex Hopper leads the team and ranks 13th in the conference at 2.5 kills per set. She has collected 75 over the nine matches. Setter Kaytee Frabotta ranks fourth in the SAC with 0.47 aces per set.
Mars Hill is currently 2-9 overall and, like Catawba, are 1-3 in the SAC. The teams have met 77 times coming into this season with Catawba holding a 50-27 edge all-time. Defensively, Christen Nicholson, stands fifth in the league at 4.93 digs per set.
Tusculum is just 4-8 overall, but stand 3-1 in the SAC. In 37 previous meeting, Catawba holds a 23-14 edge in the series. Megan Hasse stands #2 in the SAC in kills at 3.4 per set and Moriah Jones ranks second in digs with 5.51 a set.
After this weekend, Catawba will play one more road match before returning home to Goodman Gym to face Anderson on Friday, October 3.
