Volleyball Drops Four-Setter at L-R
HICKORY, N.C. -- Lenoir-Rhyne took a four-set win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Shuford Gym. With the 25-17, 23-25, 25-16, 25-14 victory, the Bears improve to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians drop to 3-9 and 1-6.
Brooke Redmond led Lenoir-Rhyne with 18 kills and 15 digs. Haley Rhyne followed with 11 kills. Briana Gottberg added 11 digs and handed out 47 assists. Killian Born served up six aces.
Catawba got a match-high eight kills from Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) and six kills and two blocks from Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS). Ashley Brown (Hendersonville, N.C./N. Henderson HS) collected three blocks to go with five kills, while libero Taylor Houser (Mt. Holly, N.C./S. Point HS/Pfeiffer) recorded 15 digs.
The Bears jumped to a 10-3 lead in the opening set and led throughout. A kill from Morant pulled the Lady Indians within 17-13 before LR ran off five of the next seven points to get a 22-15 edge. Redmond killed off the final two points for the Bears in taking the set.
Catawba hung tough in set two, pulling out a tight set at the end. A kill from Morant and one of four service aces from Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) lifted Catawba to a 21-18 lead. The Bears twice reduced the deficit to a single point before a combo block from Brown and Gallup gave Catawba the set.
Lenoir-Rhyne rolled from the outset of the third set. The Bears were up 13-4 after a kill from Brandi Thomas. Another kill from Thomas late in the set made it 21-10. Catawba ran off four straight near the end of the set before Redmond and Rhyne killed off the final two points.
The Bears used another early surge to take command of the fourth set. A six-point run pushed LR out to a 12-4 lead. Catawba could not cut into the margin as a Rhyne kill upped the lead to 19-9 and the Bears went on to close out the match.
Catawba will return to Goodman Gym this weekend to host a pair of league matches. The Lady Indians entertain Anderson on Friday night at 7 pm then host Newberry on Saturday at 5 pm.
