Football Out to Get Back Into Win Column Against Tusculum
Catawba will look to get back into the win column this weekend as football will host Tusculum on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Catawba Indians will try to shake off a narrow 35-33 loss to #19 Carson-Newman last week.
Mike Sheehan had another solid outing as the sophomore completed 30-of-45 passes for a career-high 387 yards. He threw for a pair of touchdowns without an interception and also ran for a score. One of his top targets was Carlos Tarrats, who had six catches for a career-best 147 yards. One of his grabs went for a score and he leads the team with five TD receptions on the year.
Carson-Newman quarterback De’Andre Thomas accounted for all five Eagle scores, running for four and passing for another. He became the first player to rush for four scores against the Indians since Presbyterian’s Steve Parsley, who accounted for six in a triple overtime win in 1989.
Catawba will once again face an athletic quarterback in Tusculum’s Malcolm Pendergrass. The red-shirt freshman leads the Pioneers in rushing at 60 yards per game and adds another 186 yards in the air. Pendergrass has thrown five TDs with just a single interception. His top target has been Justin Houston with 28 receptions, including 17 catches for 199 yards in the loss to North Greenville.
The Indians counter with Sheehan, who leads the league in several categories, including his nine touchdown passes. The sophomore is completing 65% of his passes and is averaging 217 yards per game. The Indians have spread out its targets with four receivers already in double digits through four games. Tyler Hamilton leads the way with 18, with Tarrats adding 17 and Gary Williams 16.
Jason Taylor is tops in the SAC as he averages nearly 10 tackles per game. He also has a team-high six stops for losses. Jamal Lackey has five tackles for losses among his 33 tackles as he ranks just behind Taylor.
Catawba has alternated wins and losses this season, while Tusculum is winless since its opening win over College of Faith. This will be the last home game for Catawba until its returns on Oct. 25 to face Brevard.
