Catawba to host Women's Basketball Regional

Catawba College has been selected as the host site of the 2003 NCAA Division II South Atlantic Region Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Lady Indians are one of eight teams that will comprise the tournament, which will begin play on Friday, March 14. Semifinal action will take place on Saturday, March 15 with the championship on Monday, March 17. Catawba received one of the five at-large bids for the tournament. The Lady Indians (24-6), are the fourth seed and were the South Atlantic Conference Champions, but fell in the tournament final. Lenoir-Rhyne (18-11), which won the automatic bid for winning the SAC Tournament, is the #8 seed. The Bears will face top-seeded Shaw University (29-2), the CIAA tournament champion, in the opening round. Catawba will face the other CIAA team to make the field, Fayetteville State (20-8), the fifth-seed and an at-large selection. The teams faced each other to open the season in Louisville, KY, with Catawba earning an 86-82 win in overtime. The bottom half of the bracket is comprised of four teams from the Peach Belt Conference. Armstrong Atlantic State (27-3) earned the automatic berth from the league and will be the #2 seed. The Lady Pirates will play seventh-seeded North Florida (17-11).
