Indians Tie Coker 0-0 In Physical Match
SALISBURY, NC -- The Catawba College men’s soccer team fought hard to a 0-0 tie after two grueling overtimes to the Coker Cobras Saturday night at Frock Field. Catawba improves to 2-7-1 on the season and 0-4-1 in the South Atlantic Conference while Coker now stands at 2-4-3 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference.
After two hard fought, physical halves that included two players leaving the field in blood and many more fighting through cramps the teams remained deadlocked at zero. In the first overtime the teams continued to battle without any serious challenges on goal.
The final overtime period proved to be more intense as the Indians came close to victory on two separate occasions. The first came in the 115th minute of the match as Catawba challenged the Coker defense. In an attempted clear the Cobras were called for a handball in the box, resulting in a Catawba penalty kick. Freshman Jack Pettett attempted the kick that was saved by a diving Coker goalie, Kyndle Cobb.
The Indians would press again in the 118th minute as Brian Woulfe drilled in a shot from well outside the box. Cobb would again make a leaping save to avoid defeat.
Cobb ended the match with four saves while Catawba’s Christian Watts recorded three of his own. Both teams finished the game with nine shots while Coker held the advantage in corners, 9-3.
Catawba will hit the road on Wednesday to face Queens University at 5:00 kickoff.
