Volleyball Snaps Slide With 4-Set Win at Queens
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Catawba snapped a five-match losing streak, getting past host Queens in four sets to claim a win in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Curry Arena. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-23, 25-17, 19-25, 26-24 in improving to 4-11 overall and 2-8 in the SAC. The Royals fall to 5-12 and 2-7.
Leading two sets to one, Catawba jumped to an early lead in the fourth set then rallied to snatch the win on a late kill from Ashley Brown (Hendersonville, N.C./N. Henderson HS) and a Queens hitting error. An ace from McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS), kills from Audrey Hoffman (Dacula, Ga./Mill Creek HS) and Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) and four Queens hitting errors gave Catawba a 9-2 edge.
Queens responded and went on a 10-1 run that included a pair of aces from Katie Schoenrock to lead 14-11. Down 21-19, Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) posted consecutive kills to tie the set. Queens retook the lead, but a kill from Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) and an ace from Taylor Houser (Mt. Holly, N.C./S. Point HS/Pfeiffer) put the Lady Indians up 23-22. Queens staved off one match point on a kill from Meredith Jones, but Brown followed with her kill and Jones' hitting error ended the match.
Hopper led Catawba with a dozen kills, while Brown had seven kills and five blocks. Setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) served three aces and handed out 15 assists. Jones tallied 12 kills for Queens with Schoenrock collecting 10 kills, three blocks and three aces.
Catawba pulled out a tight first set with a late surge. Queens had led early before the Lady Indians went ahead 11-8 on a kill from Howard. The Royals battled back to lead 14-12 and were up 21-19 before a Catawba rally.
Howard had a kill then Brown teamed up with Garrison and Hoffman on blocks to put the Lady Indians up 22-21. A pair of Queens hitting errors made it 24-21, but a kill and block from Elizabeth Bialkowski brought the Royals within 24-23. Brown answered with a kill to give Catawba the set.
The Lady Indians held a small lead at the early part of set two then used a 4-0 run to go up 14-8. Brown started the run with a combo block with Hoffman and ended it with a kill. A kill from Howard pushed the lead to 19-12 and Morant killed off set point.
Queens stayed alive after jumping to a big lead in set three. A 5-0 run that included an ace by Schoenrock and a kill from Jones put the Royals up 9-3. It was 17-11 after a kill from Alex Thompson. Catawba got within 17-14 and 22-18, but couldn't recover from the early deficit.
Catawba will travel to Brevard on Friday for a 7 p.m. match.
