Volleyball Gives Up Two Set Lead in Loss at Brevard
BREVARD, N.C. -- Host Brevard came back from two sets down to top Catawba 16-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20 and 17-15 in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Boshamer Gym. The Tornados improve to 9-8 overall and 3-7 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 4-12 and 2-9.
After blowing a 13-9 lead in the final set, Brevard got a block and two kills from Rachel Ruble to run off the final three points to take the match. The Lady Indians were down 14-12, but a kill from Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) and two blocks from Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) had put Catawba up 15-14.
Hopper led Catawba with 14 kills and two aces with Morant adding a dozen kills and three blocks. Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) collected 13 kills, while setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) had 15 digs and 26 assists.
Catawba got off to lead in the opening set at 10-4, benefiting from a stretch of four straight hitting errors from the Tornados. Brevard got to within 13-12 , but Hopper had a kill and an ace to help push the Lady Indians out to a 17-12 edge. Catawba kept a comfortable margin from there as Brevard hit -.031 in the set.
The Lady Indians were out quickly in set two as well. Following an ace from Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill HS) and a kill from Hopper, Catawba led 9-4 after a 5-0 run. The Lady Indians were up 18-11 after another Hopper kill before Brevard ran off six straight points. Kills from Hopper, Morant and McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS) kept Catawba on top before finally pulling away at the end.
Brevard answered, using a 9-1 run early in set three to turn a 6-3 deficit into a 12-7 lead. Kills from Bri Howard (Graham, N.C./S. Alamance HS) and Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) closed the gap to 17-16. The Lady Indians were down just 19-18 when three straight kills from Hannah Elmore sparked a final 6-0 run for the Tornados.
The Tornados led by four early in set the fourth set before a block and kill from Morant cut the deficit to 15-14. Brevard came back with a block and two kills from Samantha Cox to go up 19-14. Catawba ran off four straight point late to get within 22-20, but the Tornados scored the final three points, ending with an ace from Aleksandra Vrvillo to force the winner-take-all set.
Elmore posted 18 kills to pace the Tornados. Ruble and Fatima Gharachorloo each added 13 kills. Vrvillo posted 22 digs and served three aces, while setter Erin Barr handed out 42 assists.
Catawba will host Coker at Goodman Gym for its next match which comes on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
