Lomax, Hatley Lead Catawba at Royal XC Challenge
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Catawba College cross country team competed in the Royal XC Challenge Saturday morning hosted by Queens University at McAlpine Park. The Catawba women finished in 21st place while the men finished in 19th. Twenty-seven teams competed in the women’s race while 25 teams placed for the men.
Freshman Jennifer Lomax led the charge for the Lady Indians to finish in 79th with a time of 20:47. South Carolina Art & Design’s Jessy Scarpone finished as the fastest female with a time of 17:50.9 which also helped secure her team’s victory. Catawba’s Erica Boles and DeAnna Hedgepeth followed Lomax with 92nd and 93rd, respectively. This meet marked the first race of the year in which Catawba qualified for a team placement thanks to the addition of new runners in Jordan Hunt and Kayla Tucker.
In the men’s race, an unattached runner, Shaun Thompson, claimed the overall victory with a time of 23:09.3. Catawba’s Nathan Hatley was the first Catawba Indian to cross the finish line. Hatley’s run placed in 60th position with a time of 27.58. Matthew Jordan-Steele finished four seconds later to place 65th. As a team, Tennessee Wesleyan claimed the overall win with 39 points.
Catawba will return to action on October 25th for the Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational at 9 a.m.
