Morant's Big Night Helps Lead Volleyball to Win Over Coker
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba claimed a four-set win over visiting Coker in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 25-13, 25-13, 20-25 25-13 to improve to 5-12 overall and 3-9 in the SAC. The Cobras fall to 3-16 and 0-12.
Erin Morant (Bealeton, Va./Liberty HS) led Catawba with 18 kills and five blocks. The sophomore hit at 51.7% with just three errors in 29 swings. Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael HS) followed with 14 kills and Rachel Gallup (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland HS) added 11. Both had four blocks.
Hopper had three early kills in the opening set to help the Lady Indians to a quick 6-2 lead. Holding an 11-6 edge, Catawba went on a 10-3 run that featured three kills and a block from Hopper. Ashley Brown (Hendersonville, N.C./N. Henderson HS) posted a pair of combo blocks to end the first set.
The second set was tight until Catawba used a 16-3 run to take control with a 23-11 lead. Gallup had a pair of kills to start the run, while McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden HS) and Hadleigh Loy (Haw River, N.C./E. Alamance HS) served aces. Morant killed off the final three points for Catawba.
Coker battled back in the third set. Sparked by three kills from Toni Hammer, the Cobras went out to a 6-3 lead. After a pair of Lady Indian attack errors it was 11-6. Catawba rallied on two kills from Hopper and a kill and block from Gallup to grab a 15-14 lead. With the set tied at 17-all Alexis Berles and Christen Bragg combined on blocks around a kill from Brooke Closset to put the Cobras up 20-17. Hammer had two kills and Bragg two aces to help close out the set.
The fourth set was tied at 3-3 when Morant sparked Catawba with three kills in a run that put the Lady Indians up 10-4. Garrison added two kills and one from Brown pushed the lead to 17-6. Morant added two more kills down the stretch as Catawba went on to take the set.
Megan Hardy led Coker with 13 kills, two blocks and a pair of aces. Berles added eight kills and four blocks with Hammer collecting seven kills. Bragg totaled 26 assists with four blocks and two aces.
Loy recorded 20 digs for Catawba with Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill HS) posting 17 digs and 17 assists. Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) handed out 268 assists with 11 digs and four kills.
Catawba hits the road again this weekend. The Lady Indians will face Lincoln Memorial on Friday night at 7 pm and Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm.
