Football Rallies From Early Deficit to Top UNC Pembroke
PEMBROKE, N.C. -- Catawba overcame an early 14-6 deficit to top host UNC Pembroke 30-17 in football action on Saturday afternoon at Johnson Stadium. The Catawba Indian defense held the Braves to just 250 yards as Catawba improves to 4-3. UNC Pembroke falls to 1-5.
Mike Sheehan (Wilmington, N.C./Laney HS) accounted for 266 yards of total offense with a touchdown rushing and passing. Sheehan went 16-of-24 through the air for 186 yards and ran for another 80 yards. Carlos Tarrats (Jacksonville, Fla./Raines HS) had four catches for 118 yards and a score.
The Indians jumped on top quickly as Mark McDaniel (China Grove, N.C./S. Rowan HS) intercepted a Reggie Pinner pass on the game’s second snap and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown less than a minute into the game. That was the lone bright spot for Catawba in the opening quarter as the Indian offense ran just three plays and totaled two yards between two UNCP touchdowns.
John Rich caught a four-yard pass from Pinner to put UNCP on top at the 9:57 mark of the first quarter. Seth Owen connected with B.J. Bunn on the first play of the second quarter to give the Braves a 14-6 edge.
A 45-yard pass from Sheehan to Tarrats set up Catawba’s first offensive score. Reid Carlton (Lecanto, Fla./Trinity Catholic HS) finished off the drive with a one-yard run. The Indians seized momentum with two scores in the final three minutes of the first half. Sheehan ripped off two big runs, the second resulting in an 11-yard touchdown and a 20-14 lead. Chad Hollandsworth (Kernersville, N.C./E. Forsyth HS) connected on a 38-yard field on the final play of the half to put the Indians up 23-14 at the break.
The two defenses set the tone in the second half, but not before Catawba scored on its first possession on Sheehan’s perfect 40-yard strike to Tarrats. UNCP got inside the Catawba 10-yard-line late in the quarter, but the Indians defense held the Braves to a field goal which would result in the final score.
Catawba limited UNCP to 64 yards on the ground. Pinner completed 15-of-24 passes for 121 yards, while Owen went 11-of-14 for 65 yards. Bunn made 11 catches for 100 yards.
Jason Taylor (Bahama, N.C./Northern HS) recorded 13 tackles for Catawba on defense with one for a loss. McDaniel made seven stops with one for a loss and an additional pass break up in addition to his pick-six. Jamal Lackey (Mocksville, N.C./Davie Co. HS) had a pair of stops for losses with Kyle Kitchens (Decatur, Ga./Decatur HS), Jonathan Jean (Orange Park, Fla./Fleming Island HS) and Marquez Robbs (Gastonia, N.C./Ashbrook HS) posting sacks.
Catawba returns home to Shuford Stadium next Saturday to host Brevard at 1:30 p.m.
