Baucom Scores Two to As Indians Beat Brevard in Double Overtime
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College junior Allison Baucom scored two goals, including a game winner in the second overtime, to lift the Lady Indians over Brevard 3-2 in women’s soccer action Saturday evening at Frock Field. The win advances Catawba to 10-4 on the year and 5-3 in the South Atlantic Conference while the Brevard Tornados drop to 3-10 and 1-7.
Brevard held a 1-0 advantage through most of the second half until the 77th minute when Baucom claimed her first goal off a penalty kick. The foul came during a Catawba corner kick where a Brevard defender was whistled for shoving down a Catawba player in the box. Baucom’s kick landed just inside the left post out of reach of the diving keeper.
In the 84th minute, Brevard would reclaim the lead after Katherine Nickels outran the Lady Indians’ defense to create a one-on-one opportunity against Catawba keeper, Bethany Davis.
With 1:10 left in regulation the Lady Indians tallied the equalizer off a Kiersten Peck corner kick that connected with the head of Kate Weisner.
Baucom would score the game winner during the second overtime in the 118th minute. Peck created the opportunity by out running a Tornado defender to a long ball. Peck collected the ball on the end line to the right of the Brevard goal. Peck served the ball to the left side of the net where Baucom stood unguarded.
Catawba dominated the control of the ball through the game and it showed in the shots as the Lady Indians held a 25-6 advantage. Despite the large margin only ten shots landed on goal while Brevard placed three of their six shots on goal.
Brevard’s goalie, Jocelyn Springer, had a strong game in the loss, recording seven saves on the night. Davis recorded a save of her own in the win.
Catawba will travel to Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday evening for their next match. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
