Baseball falls to Barton 8-3

SALISBURY, NC -- Sean Latimer (London, ONTARIO, CANADA) hit a pair of home runs as Barton defeated host Catawba 8-3 in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Bulldogs improve to 13-10, while the Tribe falls to 15-9. After a scoreless first inning, Barton struck for four runs off Tribe freshman starter Scott Dunning (Matthews, NC). Tyler Petty (Rocky Mount, NC) started the scoring with a RBI single, which was followed by a three-run homer by Latimer, giving the Bulldogs the 4-0 lead. Catawba got a run back in the fifth, but Latimer had a solo shot in the seventh and Barton added two more homers in the eighth for a 7-1 lead. Catawba had loaded the bases in the seventh, down 5-1, but Spence Southard (Greensboro, NC) grounded into a double play to end the threat. The Indians would again load the bases in the eighth, but long fly balls by Jeff Boyles (Pinnacle, NC) and Chad Hill (Bennett, NC) were caught at the wall, producing just one run. Latimer also added a double for a 3-for-4 day with four RBI. Rufus Wilson (Washington, NC) had two hits for the Bulldogs. Scott McIver (Raleigh, NC) earned the win on the mound, allowing no earned runs on seven hits over his seven innings. #####
