Homecoming Brings Brevard's Triple Option Ground Attack to Shuford Stadium

FB_14_SheehanMikeNBY

For the fourth time this season, Catawba will try for consecutive football wins as they take the field Saturday against Brevard.  The team is also looking for two straight home wins for the first time since closing 2012 with a win over Brevard and opening 2013 with a victory over West Liberty.

The Catawba Indians are coming off a 30-17 road win over UNC Pembroke last weekend.  Catawba started quickly on a Mark McDaniel 28-yard interception return to go up 6-0.  The Braves responded with two scores to lead 14-6 before Catawba rallied in the second quarter to take a 23-14 edge to the break.

Catawba ran just three plays on offense in the first quarter and totaled two yards.  The Indians responded and scored touchdowns on a 4-play, 70-yard drive and a 10-play, 81-yard yard drive to take the lead.  The Indians closed the half on a field goal after an 11-play, 58-yard drive.

The defense limited UNCP to 250 total yards.  Of those yards, 108 came on the first two Brave drives and 50 more in the final minute with the outcome decided.  Jason Taylor made 13 tackles to lead the defense, which produced three sacks.  McDaniel intercepted his third pass in as many weeks to take over the team lead.

Mike Sheehan accounted for most of Catawba’s offense.  He threw for 186 yards and ran for 80, passing for a score and running for a score.  He had 266 total yards of the 318 for the team.  Carlos Tarrats made four catches for 118 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown to start the second half to put the Indians up 30-14.

Brevard lost to Wingate 43-21 last weekend and left the Tornados still searching for their first win of the season.  Jordan Ollis had a pair of rushing touchdowns for Brevard, but it was two second quarter TDs by Wingate that put the Bulldogs up 26-14 at the break.

Ollis, who averages 124 yards a game, was held to just 28 yards.  Kelvin Jeter totaled 110 yards, including a touchdown run of 76 yards.  The Tornados triple-option attack was limited to 255 yards on the ground.

Saturday will mark the eighth meeting of the schools in football.  Catawba has won six of the previous seven with the lone Brevard victory coming in the 2009 ‘Mud Bowl’ by the score of 7-6.  The Indians claimed a 34-17 win last season.  Cary Littlejohn ran for a career-high 146 yards for Catawba and Danny O’Brien threw for 320 yards and three scores.

Catawba outgained Brevard 566-242 last season.  Ollis had 108 yards rushing and Jeter added another 79.  Catawba led just 13-10 at the half, but Catawba scored three unanswered touchdowns to go up 34-10 early in the final quarter.

The football game at 1:30 pm kicks off a full day of athletic events for Homecoming.  After football, volleyball will host Tusculum and the soccer teams will entertain Lincoln Memorial.
