Softball gets split of doubleheader with Fairmont

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College split a doubleheader with visiting Fairmont State in softball action on Thursday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Lady Indians shutout Fairmont State 7-0 in the opener, while the Lady Falcons took the second game 5-3. Catawba now stands at 11-11 on the year, while Faimont is 3-7. Catawba broke open a close game in the opener with a four-run fourth. Jessica Rivera (Key West, FL) drove home two on a triple and scored on a double by Jenn Ropp (Broadway, VA) to give Catawba a 6-0 advantage. Ropp and Stacey Handy (Advance, NC) had two hits in the opener for Catawba. Shannon Handy (Advance, NC) and Megan Wilson (Stuart, VA) combined for the shutout. Handy worked into the sixth and allowed three hits with a pair of strikeouts. Wilson allowed two hits in her two innings of work. Fairmont State grabbed a 4-0 lead in the second game before Catawba rallied in the fourth. Run-scoring doubles by Amanda Myers (Lynchburg, VA) and Val McDowell (Crofton, MD) helped the Lady Indians close within 4-3, but that was as close as Catawba would get. Handy again had two hits to place the Lady Indians. #####
